American Revolution and independence
American colonies were only created in order to enrich and support England, which was also known as the motherland at the time. They were only allowed to trade with England and nobody else. Private companies and religious groups help financed these colonies. John Hancock was very important during this time. The English did not enforce the trade regulations during this time and that allowed John Hancock to be able to smuggle goods and participate in illegal trading. After a while people wanted their rights to be protected by the government and that resulted in the Declaration of Independence. By the 1780s everyone wants a new nation since the colonies did not work. Since everyone wanted a new nation the articles of confederation was created but it had its problems.
During that time the articles of confederation did not have the power to tax. People viewed the government as not having any power and being weak when it came to upholding rights. The US constitution was what all the people were waiting for. The constitution defined who “the people” were but the fugitive slave clause made it worse for people of color that were slaves.
